Day 21: West Coast
13:00 launch so we might get some tail winds and sun. Morning on Keeha Bay is foggy. Outhouse is 1/4 mild down the beach and water questionable. Otherwise, great camp.
Surf launch executed smoothly. We paddle through fog, crossing Pachena Bay to pick up the shoreline again. Staying outside the breakers the fog allows a misty view of the shore and cliffs. Beautiful. Further southeast the shore becomes beach. We see one party of 8 walking north.
Surf is too large and violent for a landing. There might be some protected coves but we choose to not try. We stay far enough out that the shore is somewhat obscured and so we may be obscured to people on the shore.
At the half way point we take a short break on the water. Otherwise , steady on for 15nm. Occasionally the wind is strong enough to get a moderate boost from our sails. The sun never shines on us.
Our camp bay gets some protection from surf. Nelson and Colin make good landings but then their boats are caught by a set of large waves. David and I watch and learn.
The beach is very beautiful. I expected to be crouching on a narrow band of damp sand above high tide. Instead, we have a broad basin of pea gravel with the high tide well below us. Feels remote and in the fog very private:
