Day 9: Rest day

Rain is forecast for all day today, so we chose to take a rest day. I have sure been enjoying the clear weather and look forward to more. Should be sunny Wednesday, then more rain after that. We will have some rainy paddling days. Paddling in the rain is not the problem. It is the take-down and set-up of camp in the rain that is the problem. After a few days, everything is wet. But then the sun comes out again, and everything gets dry.

This camp has a luxury: a toilet. It is here because there is a constant stream of hikers camped here. The toilet is a urine-diverted model: solid waste lands on a conveyor while urine flows away. Then 15 pumps of a foot pedal turn the conveyor enough to deposit the waste … somewhere. No video of this.

A group of hikers arrive mid-morning and set up camp. That’s them, across the way, all in tents.

Much less comfortable than a kayak camp. One stops by to say hello. They have two children in their party, 7 and 11. Says the trail is great for kids. No elevation gain and lots to see. Apparently, two whale skeletons.

If you are wondering what happened to the whale video, Colin says there is nothing to see. One grey hump that maybe looks different than all the other grey humps of water. I’ve never gotten good photos of a whale from a kayak.
